Timeline: The Path to Real ID Implementation

The deadline for Real ID is now six days away. It’s only taken 20 years to get this far, which is bad even by government standards.

Yes, Covid played a role, but the Real ID Act passed in May 2005. It had already taken 15 years when Covid became the excuse to extend the deadline not once, but twice more.

The extensions were welcome news to many of us. The last thing any sane person wants to do is hang out at the DMV for a few hours. Fortunately, you don’t need a Real ID for domestic air travel if you have a passport, which is something to consider when reading figures on the percentages of state populations that are Real ID compliant.

The silly part is that people didn't used to have show an ID to board a plane. That started in the 1990's under pres. Clinton. A plane went down in New York and they thought it was shot down by someone on the ground. To make people think the govt was in charge and taking action they started requiring ids in the airport, no matter tgat they thought the terrorist was on the ground no where near an airport. So now its like they weren't id'ing enough and need to id more. They want to be super strong id'ers.

There was a guy a few decades ago who was trying to sue to stop this. His argument was, as i recall, that it says in the Constitution that the Fed govt cannit demand id's to control travel between states, which is exactly what the King of England was doing and one big reason he gor the boot out of the USA. So as you can imagine, the dude's crusade went nowhere because the courts want to trample all over people so they are safe.
