This next idea is probably not "technically" a "DM" but I guess you could also set up a privacy group with just the intended recipient in it. The lock will show which means it is private but the envelope will not which means it is not direct. I reckon it would be as private as anything else though the recipient would have no idea who was in the group.

The same is true if you select multiple people from the ACL, which is why I usually use @! for DMs. That way, everybody involved knows who else has access.
